Biotechnology Building Addition, Madison, WI

The Biotechnology Building Addition provides research laboratory, vivarium, instructional and administrative space amounting to 48,700 net square feet in a building that is 86,000 gross square feet. In addition the program included renovating space in the Genetics Biotechnology Building basement of 26,000 net square feet. The new facility also accommodates the newly created Genome Center. Placing these groups together in a building connected to the existing Genetics Biotechnology Building creates synergy of overlapping academic missions as well as assists in attracting and retaining talented research faculty.

A major objective of the new facility was that the labs be flexible in order to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants over the life of the building. In order to achieve this level of flexibility and adaptability all lab floors are designed to locate both open labs as well as closed labs on a floor. Another goal of the project was to maximize the utilization of natural light in both laboratories and offices. GPR met this requirement by placing the laboratories and offices on the perimeter of the building with internal laboratory support space. The laboratories are adaptable over time, accommodating shifts in types of activity and density of personnel while minimizing remodeling costs associated with this programmatic research trends adjustments.
