GPR, along with the representative members of the Whitehead Institute developed the original study to establish criteria necessary for the planning of a new facility. We worked with the WI in establishing basic professional, technical and administrative staffing requirements; basic staffing projections were used to develop an initial institute sized based on the number of faculty and the number of laboratories required; a gross building size was established using a preliminary space listing; and massing comparisons were used to establish the optimum number of laboratory floors; and the development of typical laboratory layouts.
The facility consists of 133,000 gsf, with 77,000 nsf of space devoted entirely to biomedical research and its administration. A centralized animal holding and procedure room is, also included. The building plan was based around a flexible laboratory module, which can be changed to suit a variety of research activities. All laboratories and public spaces are arranged at the perimeter of the building, utilizing large windows to maximize access to daylight.
