Washington University McDonnell Pediatrics Research Building, St. Louis, MO The development of the McDonnell Pediatrics Research Building was viewed as an opportunity to enhance both the quality and the quantity of the research environment for the School of Medicine at Washington University. The building is 154,000 total net square feet of generic wet laboratory, laboratory support, and office/amenities. Using a floor plate efficiency of 70%, the facility consists of eight floors, each with a floor plate of 16,250 net square feet. A major objective of the McDonnell building was that it be as flexible as possible in order to accommodate the changing needs of occupants over the life of the building. The McDonnell Pediatrics Research Building is a unique research facility for Washington University School of Medicine, dedicated to biomedical research pertaining to pediatrics and cancer study. This research facility helps to insure that the University continues its leading role in these areas and attract talented researchers. The most important feature of the programming and planning effort was the University's clear direction that the building contain generic laboratories and flexible laboratory space. The generic laboratories are designed to accommodate virtually any benchtop research, while the flexible laboratory support space can be tailored to the specific requirements of the individual researchers or departments. The programs that were identified to occupy the McDonnell building are Developmental Biology, Molecular & Cell Biology, Infectious & Immune Disease, Pediatrics, and Allied Pediatrics.
