Biological Research Tower 3, Pittsburgh, PA
The Biological Science Tower No. 3 (BST-3) building at the University of Pittsburgh enables the University to consolidate research activities, provide space for recruitment, provide the latest high technology research support and allow for the sharing of resources. A specific goal for planning and design was to promote interaction among scientists and staff, which is vital to achieving the University of Pittsburgh's mission of interdisciplinary research.
The facility houses the Pittsburgh Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the Drug Discovery Institute, the Departments of Structural Biology and computational Biology and several additional state-of-the-art research programs. The Imaging Center on the basement level includes a 7T MRI and a state-of-the-art NMR facility with 600 mHz, 700 mHz, 800 mHz and 900 mHz NMRs, and an EM Suite.
GPR designed laboratories that included generic wet laboratory space consisting of basic bench research space in an open laboratory environment, readily adaptable for varied research efforts. Laboratories are well located at the perimeter of each floor to maximize daylight and lab safety. Laboratory support spaces are located in the center of the floor, adaptable to support individual researchers in the modular laboratory or research groups on the whole floor. Office space is clustered on each floor to promote interaction between researchers.
