The University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey Child Health Institute, New Brunswick, NJ The guiding objective was to create a Child Health Institute at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School with a strong relationship to the adjacent Bristol Meyer Squibb Children's Hospital. The mission of the Child Health Institute is to investigate the genetic, environmental and behavioral factors in human growth and development with emphasis on prevention, treatment and cure of childhood diseases. The six-floor building consists of two upper research laboratory floors (50,000 GSF) of open laboratories, laboratory support, faculty offices, and conference spaces. Two lower floors house Pediatric Clinical research and outpatient facilities (35,000 GSF). A vivarium (21,000 GSF / 14,000 NSF) is located on the basement level with elevator access from the research floors. A daycare facility, retail space and building support occupy the remaining floors. The building links the researcher with the physician scientist to enhance interaction and to catalyze the transfer of molecular genetics into preventative therapies.
