The Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics and The Carl Icahn Laboratory, Princeton, NJ

The Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics, housed in the Carl Icahn Laboratory, is a 138,000 GSF research facility located on the southern end of Princeton University's campus. The Institute's mandate is to innovate in teaching and research at the interface of modern biology and the more quantitative sciences. The Institute's uniqueness is to apply the perspectives and analytical tools from the fields of physics and computer science to compelling problems in biology.

A principal goal at the Lewis-Sigler Institute is to promote the intellectual interactions between the fields of molecular biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.

Just as the science is changing rapidly, so must the interior laboratory spaces of the building. For that reason the labs were designed for flexibility to adapt to the changes in the scientific disciplines.

The building has been designed so that public functions (office, meeting rooms & teaching spaces) and the basement program (core facilities) have been clearly defined, while the laboratory spaces have been designed as an open-loft configuration that is easily reconfigured when new faculty are hired.

Final fit-out of the labs was determined by interviews with management and scientists after the establishment of the lab shell space.
